DC's Metal Men 2007
Duncan Rouleau (w & a)
Dr. Will Magnus creates a responsometer; this device can send signals out to atoms and it is able to listen to the atoms and in turn gives a response. The Metal Men are made of solid metal with a responsometer placed inside them. This is a type of A.I. never scene before. These guess are suppose to be the metals personified. Oh Boy, doesn’t this make my job of breaking this down all the more interesting.

First, lets look at the responsometer!
A responsometer is a mechanical device put into the metal men that allows them to function as individuals. How does it do this? Dr. Magnus calls the responsometer an atomic transponder; it speaks to the atoms and the atoms respond and it is this response from the atoms that manifests itself as A.I. It explains this by: “Superstring theory, each force in the universe emits its own frequency. A singular harmonic that defines what it is.”
Can all this be real?
First, lets understand what Superstring theory is. Superstring theory is an attempt to unify all of reality (micro and macro) into one theory. It suggests that the fundamental “particle” or substance is strings going all throughout the universe. Also, one layer of strings represents only one dimension but there are actually 10 and all of them are intertwined in a very intricate way. https://www.ted.com/talks/brian_greene_on_string_theoryhttp://blogs.discovermagazine.com/discoblog/files/2010/06/string-theory.jpg
Now, can the statement about emitting a unique frequency be true? Yes. The strings that makeup the building blocks of the universe vibrate in such a way that they can give off a unique signature and putting them together would give something of a more unique signature. Think of this as a symphony. All flute players have a different style of playing, so they are unique and when you combine all the other pieces they will be even more unique playing together.
Using a responsometer to “communicate” with the atoms is a bit far fetched; but that’s what makes for a good science fiction story, right? We have instrumentation that can determine the structure of atoms and even subatomic particles, that’s what we use the CERN hadron collider to do. (http://home.web.cern.ch) The device may be able to distinguish between the different pieces of vibrating string in all those atoms. However, it is hard to believe those simple building blocks have “wants and desires” to be personified. If this were possible, maybe we are all really personifying the strings compose our existence. Are our brains just a large responsometer? I sincerely doubt it. It’s fun to think about all this.
