DC's Justice League #32
Johns (w)
Mahnke (a)
In this issue the Doom Patrol are put together by a good doctor who wants to be called Chief.
He stabilized the unstable molecules that collectively make up Element Woman, who you see in the orb and brought together a few other "unfortunates" as he calls them.
Negative Man was drowned in the bottom of the ocean while being exposed to unknown radioactive toxins and Elasti-Girl has a chronic smile on her face due to cellular decay from exposure to a strange gas.
Well, all these fascinating events lead me to some scientific questions!
Questions:
1.) What radioactive substances could be at the bottom of the ocean?
2.) Could thin lead plated wrapping block radiation?
3.) What strange gas could break down cellular structure or just make you smile?
Answers:
1.) Since the fist atomic bomb was set off in Japan there has been radioactive contamination in our oceans. There have also been nuclear spills like the Fukushima plant, three mile island and more as well as sunken nuclear submarines. So, there are several unnatural sources that could lead to making Negative Man.

2.) We need to stick a geiger counter to Negative Man to see how much radiation he is giving off. We know it is enough to cause cancer but we also do not know how long the doctors were exposed to his radiation. The doctors dying of cancer indicates that the exposure was over the course of a longer period of time. If someone is exposed to a heavy dose of radiation in a short period of time they will suffer acute radiation syndrome, which include but are not limited to nausea, vomiting, headache and diarrhea. So, Negative Man must emit low levels of radiation and the lower the amount of radiation the thinner the lead wrapping can be. It might be better to wear a suit, shown on the left, to protect everyone better from his radiation. Just using lead wrapping will give a higher probability of having cracks in the protection and exposing everyone to radiation.

3.) Copper, zinc oxides and lipoproteins can cause cellular damage. If these are put into a gas and localized at elasti-girls face it could cause her to chronically smile. It's strange but it is not the worst damage done.
