Lewis and Clark are tracking the American frontier when an alternate history slaps them in the face! Some plant or Flora (as they call it in the comic) have infested creatures and even people to make them like plant-zombies. In the pages you see above they sure some greek fire to deter this bear-plant-zombie from infecting them.
1.) Are there plants that can infect humans? If so, what do they do?
2.) What is greek fire?
1.) Are we going to get infected with some plant virus to make us flora-zombies? It is highly unlikely. In 2010, the first case of a plant virus possibly infecting a human or animal was recorded. To my knowledge, this is the only paper on the mater and there was a popsci article that added controversy to the conclusion. It is stated in the article that plant viruses lack necessary ability to get into human cells to be able to infect us. It seems, for now, that we do not have to worry about plant viruses killing us all.
2.) Greek fire is a mixture of chemicals used by the Roman Empire to help fortify their power. They kept the recipe so close to the vest that it eventually was lost when one of the rulers died. Within the mixture of chemicals these ingredients were almost certainly in: petroleum, naphtha, sulfur and resin. We are well aware that petroleum is flammable; naphtha is a part of petroleum that can be distilled and is very volatile. This is likely an ingredient used to lower the viscosity of the liquid to be able to project the greek fire long distances. Also, these are likely the ingredients that make it possible to be flammable in water. Organic molecules in petroleum and naphtha would no mix well with water, so this would allow them to burn on top of the water.
