DC's Legion of Super-Heroes which lead into the series Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes starting at issue 16.
Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Barry Kitson

Mark Waid wrote 30 issues of this series, which is littered with science. These powerful teens from throughout the galaxy come together with some amazing powers. Powers that have heavy roots in science and stretching science into the fantastical (of course, otherwise we wouldn't have humans with superpowers). In addition to servicing the science behind the powers for many of the characters, Waid dove into some heavy questions that border on the philosophical and scientific line which will be explored here. Taking aside all this science goodness, the series had political intrigue and lots of interpersonal drama within the Legion, which happens when you get a large group of teens together.

These are the segments that will be done regarding the Legionaries and major events within the series.
1.) Cosmic Boy
2.) Lightning Lad
3.) Sun Boy
4.) Element Lad
5.) Invisible Kid
6.) Light Lass and Star Boy
7.) Shadow Lass
8.) Triplicate Girl
9.) Colossal Boy and Atom Girl
10.) Chameleon
11.) Saturn Girl
12.) Dream Girl
13.) Phantom Girl
14.) Ultra Boy
15.) Flight Ring
16.) The Soul

1.) COSMIC BOY

Picture
Real Name: Rokk Krinn

Cosmic Boy (Cos) is the leader of the Legion and has been manipulating magnetic fields before Magneto was a stroke of Stan Lee's pin and possibly the first hero to wield such powers.

In the scene to your left Cos is breaking through a force-field to get into Brainiac 5's lab. This seemingly simple act beg many questions:
1.) What is a force field?

2.) How can it be manipulated by Cos?

3.) What might happen to cause someone to have such a magnifying power?

Answers:
1.) A force field is a field that can apply a force through seemingly no physical contact. Forces that can do this are gravity, which we know little concerning what it actually is, and magnets, which are produced by unpaired electrons.

2.) Knowing Cos can manipulate magnetic fields then we must deduce that Braniac 5's force field used magnetism. This was a poor choice on his part knowing Cos's abilities. Cos simply needs to create a magnetic field of greater magnitude with the same sign or pole (opposite poles of a magnet attract and two of the same pole repel).

3.) Humans do have very small magnetic fields produced by the current used by flowing electrons by our neurons. Electricity and magnetism are intimately liked since both deal with electrons in different ways. However, the magnetism we produce is very small useless as a power. The static cling out get in winter is a build up of electrons from excessive friction with carpet and other such objects. Once you touch a piece of metal these electrons will discharge and create a spark, which moves the electrons from you to the metal resulting in the loss of static cling. To have Cosmic Boy's powers we would have to amplify the electricity used in our bodies to a major degree and be able to control the amount of charge to control how the amount of magnitude the field will have. Cosmic Boy is an alien, so his bodies chemistry and make up are likely starkly different from our own even though he looks the same.

2.) Lightning Lad

Picture
Real Name:
Garth Ranzz

Lighting Lad is one of the 3 founders of the Legion the others being his wife (at least at one point), Saturn Girl and Cosmic Boy. This adventure has him being his usual off the cuff and fun loving person. However, a little family drama creeps in as his brother, Lighting Lord, has a dark side causes some major trouble for the team. Lightning sure is in the family! But, how?
1.) How can the Ranzz family have such a power?
2.) How can he control the power?

Answers:
1.) Well, Ranzz is an alien. However, assuming his body is very similar to the homosapians I know, we are conductive creatures. We can build up charge, a small charge, which is evident by static. Garth's body is able to build up massive charges. This means his body has to be able to store it and cut off the supply, other wise he would be releasing charge everywhere. To hold the charge his body must have something that acts like a battery! It must be a pretty large part of his body and the largest organ is the skin. I'll guess skin. Our body is sensitive to charge, mainly do to our nervous system, which functions as a result of electrical impulses.

2.) Get get electrons to go in a direction, that's gotta mean that they are flowing to a more positive area. If the target were more negative, the electrons have a negative charge, so they would repel. He should still have trouble hitting the target he desires because of this.

3.) Sun Boy... UP NEXT

Picture
Real Name : Dirk Morgna

Sun Boy has the great power of transmutation. However, there's a limitation to his powers. The transmutation only works for 60 seconds unless the atoms react with other atoms. Essentially, he's a weaker Firestorm with no flaming head (not even red hair!).

1.) How does transmutation work?
2.) How can it only last a minute?
3.) What does it mean about Sun Boy's body that he's able to do this?

<![CDATA[Firestorm v1: Origin]]>Sun, 05 Oct 2014 21:19:56 GMThttp://atomicuniverse.org/sci-review/firestorm-v1-origin
DC's first volume of Firestorm was ended prematurely after only 5 solo issues. The young story was finished as a Flash backup.
I must tip my hat to Conway and Milgrom for creating one of DC's most powerful characters. Despite being under used and under appreciated Firestorm has been at the heart of big stories, most recently Forever Evil.

Firestorm is one of the more unique characters in all of comics since fuses two people together to become the super being. Professor Martin Stein and high schooler Ronnie Raymond. This unlikely pair were merged together by an explosion at a nuclear power plant. Ronnie went to the plant to protest the plant and a terrorist group planted a bomb. Ronnie and Stein were in proximity of one another at the time of the explosion. This somehow (by defying all science) created a human-fusion reaction to create Firestorm.
As Stein and Ronnie are fused as Firestorm, Ronnie has complete control over the body and Stein merely has a back seat. Stein is there primarily to aid in teaching Ronnie the science he needs to know to wield his awesome powers. Stein being a nuclear physicist, he knows a few things about science and manipulating subatomic particles.
Firestorms powers give him the ability to transmutate matter! What is transmutation, you ask? Well, it is the transformation of one element to another. This is was alchemists tried to do for hundreds of years by turning lead into gold. Does transmutation happen? Yes! Nuclear reaction cause elements to to break down (fission) or combine (fusion) to make new elements. This is the whole basis for our nuclear energy, the controlled reaction of Uranium-238 into many different nuclei until it stabilizes into an isotope of lead. There are several types of radioactive decay, however, not all of them result in transmutation. You can look below and see the decay of U-238 and the types of radioactive decay.
Firestorm is called the Nuclear Man and it seems he is powered by nuclear reactions. How can he obtain so much power? Nuclear reaction are the most powerful reactions that we can yield. Fission, the weakest, and Fusion, the strongest, give off immense amounts of energy. The energy given off is due to mass defect, which is the mass lost to energy during the nuclear reaction. The strong force, which holds the nucleus of an atom together, wields an incredible amount of energy as the nucleus is extremely dense and houses a high concentration of protons. However, by changing the amount of neutrons in a nucleus it causes a change in the strong force by weakening it enough to make the nucleus unstable. Unstable nuclei is why radioactive elements exist.

Firestorm, somehow, causes nuclear changes in atoms to transmutate them from one element to another. Changing neutrons can cause an atoms nucleus to be unstable but it is the number of protons that give an atom its identity. Carbon has 6 protons in its nucleus, oxygen has 8 and uranium has 92. It is unclear of Firestorms method of causing transmutation. Is he causing nuclear decay? Is he, somehow, chaining subatomic particles at will? Both? Neither? It is unclear exactly how his powers work. In the real world you cannot simply turn a taxi into water, as shown below. A taxi is made of countless atoms that are mostly metal (remember this comic was written in the 70's) and to turn it into water the metal (mostly iron) has nearly triple the number of protons (26) as water (1 proton for each hydrogen and 8 for oxygen. 10 total). To be a superhero Firestorm must conceal the energy from radiating and harming the public, so he must use his powers carefully.
Thank you for reading.
Join in more Firestorm fun later as I will dissect the science used in the first volume.

<![CDATA[WASP: Origin]]>Sat, 23 Aug 2014 21:19:33 GMThttp://atomicuniverse.org/sci-review/wasp-origin
Picture
Janet Van Dyne's life changed forever by meeting Dr. Hank Pym. Janet's father wanted Pym to help him on a scientific project he had been working on but Pym refused because it was out of his specially. Dr. Van Dyne's worst fears were realized when an alien came to Earth via his experiment. The alien was no mere trouble with tribbles it was much worse as a gigantic green monster ripped though the city.

Distraught over her fathers death, Janet ran to Pym for help. Seeing her dedication to the cause of fighting ne'er-do-well's Pym let her in on his "little" secret and tells her that he's ready to have a partner to fight crime and she's the gal for him. (Ops, I mean for the job. Yeah, just for the job. Right.)
Picture
Look at all those pretty squiggles and fancy equipment. There must be some science going on; Indeed, there is! So, Pym's plan to have Janet be wasp like is to take specialized wasp wing cells and implant those under Janet's skin and antennae specialized wasp cells and put them in her head under her skin. Now, these will lay dormant until she uses the shrinking gas. Once she shrinks Janet will grow the wings and antennae of a wasp. To see the science behind shrinking go to Ant-Man: Origin Part 1.
Picture
Wow! This is some complicated biological science. Dormant cells that are triggered by a gas, implanting specialized cells to grow in a new host. Lets see if any of this is possible!
First, can we take specialized cells from on species and have it grow in or on another species?

Cross-species xenotransplants, that's the biological term for what Dr. Pym did to Janet by transplanting wasp specialized cells into her. There is a long history of cross-species xenotransplants starting in the 17th century when using animal blood in transfusions were first attempted. Sense then, transplants have been attempted using skin, kidneys and hearts. Some have been successful, most have not. There are a lot of factors to cause failure such as infection from viruses, bacteria and diseases. However, there has been one surprising success that has hit the news in the past couple of years which is earmouse. Earmouse has a human ear growing on its back by injecting human ear cells to grow there, much like what Pym did to Janet to grow antennae and wings.
Unfortunately, I was unable to find any evidence of insect to human or insect to animal xenotransplantation. This is largely due to the fact that the DNA that comprise insects and humans are too different. The reason pig research in this area is due to how similar our DNA is with theirs.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3246856/

Secondly, how is it that Wasp has antennae and wings when she shrinks but not when she is normal size? The biological term for this is epigenetic modification. Each specialized cells must know when to go to work, so there are conditions that can "turn on" or "turn off" the expression of certain genes. So, when Janet shrinks something must be happening in her genes to indicate the growth of her wings and antennae. There's nothing that indicates that we can shrink in this way so nothing to indicate how shrinking would trigger these cells. I propose that the wing and antennae cells are specialized to recognize shrinking maybe the closeness of nucleus to electrons in the atom in that area of the genes is able to activate their expression.

Although it is unlikely for someone to become the Wasp in this way her origin is deep in biological concepts that are alive and well today. Both major topics discussed are heavily researched and as we know more we making someone like Wasp will be more likely.

Marvel's Tales to Astonish # 27
1962
Written by: Stan Lee and Larry Leiber
Drawn by: Jack Kirby

This review only covers the information provided about the character in Marvel Masterworks Ant-Man Volume 1. (TtA 27-52)

Part 1 covers only the power of shrinking and growing. Part 2 will cover Pym's ability to communicate with ants.

Dr. Henry Pym is a scientist working on a shrinking and growth serum. The picture to the left shows Pym testing his shrinking serum on a chair in the lab and then enlarging it back to normal size with the growth serum.

Picture
Pym thinks it is a good idea to start live trials on himself! I do not think this is normal scientific protocol. Usually, there would be rat testing or some other small mammal before there are human trials. However, sure of himself, Pym shrink himself successfully to the size of an ant.
Pym did not plan well because he failed to prepare a growth serum he could quickly use after shrinking. So, he had a bit of an adventure outside of the lab. He found himself falling down an ant hill and fighting with some ants.

Picture
As you can see the the left, Pym was able to easily handle an ant to get away.

Picture
In the end, it was an ant that saved him as it "understood" him and scaled the wall to allow Pym to get to his growth serum by the window. I do not think I have ever had an ant "understand" me. Then again, I have not been the size of one to try and communicate with one.

I must tip my hat to him for his great discovery in the Marvel universe. Unfortunately, in this universe this tale is a bit far fetched. How is it that a liquid or gas is able to shrink someone? This is not the same as when you wash a shirt for the first time and it comes out a little smaller. That only happens after the first wash, not every time.

Picture
Look at the atom to your left. The nucleus is very small compared to the size of the whole atom. In fact it is about 100,000 times smaller than the rest of the atom. In comparison, think about the size relationship between an orange and the Earth. The orange being the nucleus of course. Within the rest of the atom is a very large electron cloud. Electrons are not that large they just orbit around taking up a lot of space. The key to shrinking and enlarging again would be controlling the space the electrons occupy in an atom. Reduce the electron space in an atom and you could shrink. So, Dr. Pym's serums must be able to manipulate the space that electrons occupy within an atom. To my knowledge, this technology has not beed developed. I think I found a new summer project to work that will revolutionize our world!

Metal Men are the their elements personified!

Look at previous posts about the Metal Men to see how this can be. This article is focusing on just Tin and Copper

Picture
Tin (Sn)

Real world characteristics:
The symbol Sn is abbreviated from the Latin word for tin, Stannum. Tin does not have many uses as an element on its own, other than making tin foil to wrap things, which is great (we use aluminum now, though). However, tin is great when mixed with other elements. The discovery of putting tin in copper dawned a whole new age of civilization, the Bronze Age. Adding tin to copper makes a hard alloy that’s better for weapons and tools. A neat thing about tin is that when you cool it to about 10 degrees Celsius it turns from a normal lustrous pliable metal to a powder. This became problematic in the 1800’s when buttons on clothes were made of tin! Winter in Russia would get a little more brisk than you might have bargained for… oops.
http://www.periodicvideos.com/videos/050.htm

Comic characteristics:
Tin was a very shy character in this book. He helped and made a good team member but he is certainly overshadowed by the other characters. Considering tin is not used for many things on its own, anymore, I can see this being his personality.

Picture
Copper (Cu)

Real world characteristics:
The symbol Cu is abbreviated from the Latin word for copper, Cyprium aes. Copper is the least valued of the coinage metals. Second to silver, copper has the highest thermal and electrical conductivity; this (and it’s abundance) has made it perfect for all our electrical wire needs. Also, where we have Iron centered hemoglobin to carry oxygen throughout our body, many crustacians (lobsters, crabs… etc) have a copper centered molecule to do the job, called haemocyanin, which is why their blood is blue.
http://www.periodicvideos.com/videos/029.htm

Comic characteristics:
Copper has so many interesting ways it can be viewed. Copper was created the year this series hit the shelves. So, she’s a very new addition to a set of characters that were manufactured by Dr. Magnus in the early 1960’s. It is good to have another girl on the team; however, she did not have much of a roll in this story arch. I am sure she has a long life ahead of her to show what she’s got.

Metal Men are the their elements personified!

Look at previous posts about the Metal Men to see how this can be. This article is focusing on just Iron and Mercury.

Picture
Iron (Fe)

Real world characteristics:
Fe comes from the Latin word for iron, ferrium. Iron is the 4th most abundant element and if the core of the Earth is taken into consideration it is the most abundant; since Earth’s core is a molten sphere of iron that spins giving Earth its magnetic field. Iron is used in a plethora of applications, most of all steel. Iron readily forms alloys with various other elements, which will give it different properties, making it useful in a variety of applications. Possibly the most useful application of iron to us is in our blood. The iron in hemoglobin helps carry oxygen throughout our bodies making it possible for us to exist.
http://www.periodicvideos.com/videos/026.htm

Comic characteristics:
Iron was mostly used as muscle. He has some personality but mostly he’s the heavy hitter. This makes sense considering steel is a very strong compound and used in so many ways to add strength to structures.

Picture
Mercury (Hg)

Real world characteristics:
Ahhh… Hydrargyrum in Latin and also known as quicksilver. This element holds a special place in my life as I did research in graduate school in mercury remediation. Mercury is one of the more interesting elements on the periodic table. It is the only liquid metal, one of only two liquid elements at room temperature. Even though it is very cool to watch it move around almost effortlessly across surfaces, it is very toxic. It was used in electrical switches and it is currently used in compact fluorescent lights (CFL’s). This shiny element is also the cause of Mad Hatter’s as the hat industry would rub mercury on the fur to make it more lustrous. The mercury would be slowly absorbed into the body, eventually effecting the nervous system causing them to go mad.

http://www.periodicvideos.com/videos/080.htm

Comic characteristics:
Mercury did move more “fluidly” that the other metal men, considering he was repeatedly posed while bending. Given mercury is such a unique element; he did behave uniquely compared to the other Metal Men. However, his snarky-ness gives an heir of rigidity, which is not a room temperature property of mercury. Also, the snarky-ness could come from the fact that he is the only liquid metal. Mercury should be consulted on this one.

Metal Men are the their elements personified!

Look at previous posts about the Metal Men to see how this can be. This article is focusing on just Platina and Lead.

Picture
Platina (Pt)

Real world characteristics:

Platina is the Portuguese spelling of platinum.

It is the third densest element. Platinum is a fairly unreactive metal. However it is used to catalyze many reactions such as catalytic converters and hydrogen fuel cells. Also, a form of platinum, called cisplatinum, is the primary compound in chemotherapy. However, the largest use of this element is to make jewelry.

http://www.periodicvideos.com/videos/078.htm

Comic characteristics:

She was the only female element in the group for a long time. She is very flirty with Magnus. She is a team player. Gold may be the leader but she is also a glue that keeps the team together and working well.

I can see were these traits can be reflected from the elements use in real life. Shiny personality but works well with the others to catalyze whatever is needed.

Picture
Lead (Pb)

Real world characteristics:

Pb stands for plumbum, which is its latin name. Lead is a grayish color that is easily manipulated (high ductility). This element has a rich history and attributed to the fall of the Roman Empire, as the Romans used lead pipes for running water. Throughout history, lead compounds were used as possible cures. Also, lead was used in paints for a very long time and only banned in the twentieth century. For a period of time, a lead compound was used in gasoline to increase the octane levels in vehicles. This was later determined to be hazardous due to expulsion of lead into the air and finally the mass buildup the element. A positive use of lead is for protective ware against radioactive elements. Lead’s density allows it to act as a block against radioactive decay.

The reason lead is so dangerous is due to its ability to deactivate the enzyme that produces hemoglobin, which then causes a build up of ALA, an acid that causes numerous health effects when in excess.

http://www.periodicvideos.com/videos/082.htm

Comic characteristics:

Lead’s personality in the comic is one of a fun loving character that is not the brightest crayon in the box. This denseness is not unfounded as lead is a dense metal. He also seems to have a very stable personality, which lead has a very stable nucleus; as much so that it is the byproduct of many nuclear reactions.

Metal Men are the their elements personified!

How can an element be personified? Dr. Magnus uses a responsomenter, which “talks” to the atoms. There are a couple of ways to think about using the term personify with regard to the atom: Physical characteristics of the element and The way humans use and perceive the element. If the responsometers are talking to the atoms it should reflect more of the physical characteristics. Neither is necessarily wrong for the use of the comic.

First, the leader of the group, Gold!

Physical Characteristics

Gold (Au) is a lustrous transition metal located in period 6. Gold is a soft metal (meaning it is easily bent or shaped) with a high density and is very nonreactive for a metal, which means it is hard to tarnish. There is only one well-known substance that is able to dissolve the metal, aqua regia. Aqua regia is a super acid that is made from a mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acids.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwnKU89CCdI

How can these traits be personified?

The non-reactivity may translate into being unflappable, which would make for a good leader, or anti-social, which would not make for a good team player.

Being lustrous may mean a bright personality or vein.

Soft metal could mean it has the ability to empathize or just bents to everyone else’s will.

There are two sides that can be taken for each of these. It is clear to me that the writers chose the more favorable traits for the character; we are dealing with a hero.

Stay tuned for more Metal Men: Elements personified!
